To be physically relaxed and mentally prepared, you want to be ready to cope with any adversity you encounter in sports. Your mental toughness will be challenged by things that are beyond your control such as weather and officiating, for example. In sports psychology, we use the phrase “anticipate and cope,” which describes a strategy that helps you react well to any challenge.
You should already have a good idea of the triggers or distractions that might cause you to increase pregame stress. If not, your first want to think about what these are for you. Mental preparation is preparing yourself to handle any adversity you will encounter in competition – from harsh weather or obnoxious fans to psych-outs from competitors.
