Beware of Negative Self-Labels

January 2, 2011 By Patrick Cohn

“You are what you think you are” holds true in sports! Negative self-labels are very unhealthy for athletes. Often they are very subtle and difficult to identify. What is a negative self-label? A negative self-label is a name you give to yourself (or adopt from what others tell you) that influences how you see yourself. For example, some golfers label themselves as poor putters, which holds confidence back.

Self-labels often deal with how you describe your own abilities as an athlete. You have to begin by taking a look at the labels you give yourself or others give you about your ability. It’s best to be honest rather than ignore these labels you give yourself. The second task it to refute or rebut these labels you give to yourself so you can develop a positive image of yourself as an athlete.
