Improving Practice Efficiency

February 10, 2011 By Patrick Cohn

Playing competitive sports at the highest level requires athletes and teams to engage in focused, quality practice, which improves both learning and performance. How can practice be more effective without spending more time? Coaches need to integrate proven methods of motor learning and sports psychology into practice to speed learning and retention. This ultimately enhances performance.

The top athletes in the world know how to practice effectively so that they can perform their best when it counts. Practice efficiency is one of the tools athletes use to help them transfer what they learn in practice to competition. This requires a baseball player to use the same intensity and same at-bat routine in the batting cage, for example, when taking batting practice. Teaching athletes to plan, rehearse, focus, and trust in practice is integral to transferring practice to the competitive arena.
